Trades House Angling Competition - 6th September 2014

Saturday the 6th of September 2014 saw the Annual Trades House of Glasgow Angling competition on the Lake of Menteith.

Team Skinners consisted of Roger Drapper and, his brother, Christopher.   They went into battle against eight other members of the House.

Unfortunately, due to the good weather and how shallow the Lake is, it was suffering with a big algae bloom.  This meant that a catch and release policy was in force.  Saturday was another beautiful day and Roger had the pleasure of sharing a boat with Robert Colvil of the Barbers.  They decided to start at Loch End Chalets, having been informed that the algae was not so bad.  They then migrated to the Heronry.  Roger was fishing an intermediated glass line with a Yellow Dancer, Red Diawl Bach and a Cormorant.  After a long drift from the Heronry they ended up out in the middle of the Lake where Roger got his first fish, a 2lb 3 oz rainbow.  This was followed about a half hour later by another rainbow at 2 lb 7 oz the first was caught on the Diawl Bach the second on the Yellow Dancer.

Lunch took place at the rookery, at 1 O'clock, where Chris and Roger were able to exchange tactics.  Chris shared a boat with Lindsay of the Bonnetmakers & Dyers and he had already caught three rainbows, his biggest around 2 lb 9oz with a Booby and Yellow Dancer being the preferred menu for the rainbow.  With most of the House competition either blanking or only having one, things were looking good for Team Skinners.  After lunch Robert and Chris headed for the cages however after flogging the water to a foam with no results we decided to go to the Malling Shore, the odd fish was showing but still no joy, Chris lost another off the Malling Shore where the only clear water being out towards the middle.  Chris then returned to the Cages whilst Roger, with about an hour to go, headed past Dog Island where he hooked into his last and biggest rainbow of the day weighting in at 2lb 8oz!  (caught on a yellow dancer).

Considering the conditions on the day Roger was pleased to get three fish, Rob his boat partner sadly blanked not even getting a nudge.  Unfortunately for the Bonnetmakers, Lindsay also blanked.

We took dinner at the Rob Roy motel where it became clear that Team Skinners had swept the board with trophies.  Chris won the heaviest fish of the day with a 3lb 4oz, and received the Train Trophy which Roger won last year.  Chris also won the Beal trophy (silver salver) for the heaviest bag of the day for someone over 60.  The prestigious Dallas Trophy plus tankard for the heaviest bag of the day which Roger won last year also went to Chris, The Skinners won the team event with a total weight of 16lb +  and received the team cup.  Finally, Roger won the Beal Trophy for the heaviest bag for someone under 60 having previously won this for the last two years!  The only trophy the Skinners missed out on was for the smallest fish caught.  All in all Team Skinners did extraordinary well considering the water conditions.  We had a lovely day, met up with some old friends and caught lots of fish.  We now are looking forward to next year to try and the possibility of retaining the trophies!
