The Gardeners regularly give grants in support of horticultural training and studies at various establishments for learning in the Glasgow area.

Matthew Elliot, a 4th year student of the BSc Horticulture with Plantsmanship course at SAC had been approached by the co-ordinator of the International Conifer Conservation Programme at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh to go to the Canary Islands to count, record and assess the conifer Juniperus cedrus, which numbers were unknown.  This project was not only important from a conservation and scientific perspective but this species of juniper would also make an excellent and hardy speciment plant for the horticultual industry.  It forms a conical shape in cultivation with branches that have delicate drooping ends.  The project was also of interest to Glasgow University and Glasgow Botanic Garden as part of their Flora of the Canaries work, and a specimen was brought back for exhibit in the Kibble Palace.  The Gardeners were pleased support this project financially and Matthew gave his presentation of his study to the Master Court at the end of May 2009.  He received bound copies of this thesis for the College and himself.
