EDUCATION

The Gardeners regularly give grants in support of horticultural training and studies at various establishments for learning.

University of Glasgow
Scottish Agricultural College, Auchencruive

In 2011/12 the craft is helping Andrew Sinclair, a student entering his fourth year of studies of the BSc in Horticulture with Plantsmanship course.

Andrew's fourth year project is to assist in a Juniper conservation project centred on a remnant population in the Pentland Hills. He will be working with Biodiversity Officer, Caroline Peacock on establishing optimum conditions for natural regeneration. New Juniper cuttings are currently being propagated and grown on at the council’s Inch Nursery, and new planting sites have to be identified and the health of the propagated stock maintained. His project will also examine the causes behind the lack of natural regeneration in previously replanted areas and he hopes to compare the target site with other habitats where Juniper populations exist in the west and north of Scotland.

The Craft is grateful to Doctor Margaret Norton of the Scottish Agricultural College for her assistance.

Diploma in Professional Gardening

The Craft is delighted to be able to provide financial support to Andrew McGinty to assist with his studies. Andrew is in the second year of his studies and is currently working at Geilston Gardens (the NTS garden near Helensburgh) and Glenarn garden (a private garden in Rhu).

Willie Sinclair, whom the Craft supported last year completed his Diploma with Distinction and has recently been appointed as the Gardener at Finlaystone Estate near Greenock.
