Census for the House

At a recent meeting of the Trades House Deacon Callum Leslie of the Skinners presented a leather bound showcase 1831 Glasgow census to Deacon Convener John Elliott for addition to the Trades House library. This he explained is one of the finest examples of the Skinners craft work and was carried out by a recent Craft prize winning student of the Glasgow College of Building and Printing, Adam Middleton, as reported in the “Craftsman”. The Deacon Convener said how delighted he was that the historic census gifted to the Skinners by Ex Convener Alastair McLay, having been so magnificently bound, could take its proper place as an exhibit and book of reference in the fine library of the House. Late Collector of the House Tom Gilchrist said this gift is an example of the continuing high quality of skills being maintained in leatherwork with the support of the Incorporation.
