GLASGOW PUPILS TAKE TOP CRAFT AWARDS

Six secondary school pupils have won the top accolades in the annual Trades House of Glasgow School Craft Competition.  Ross McAlear (15), a 4th year pupil at Knightswood Secondary School, took the overall prize for his glass-topped mahogany coffee table produced as part of his Craft and Design studies.

They were among more than 60 pupils from secondary schools across Glasgow who had their craftsmanship rewarded by the Trades House, in recognition of the exceptional craft work they have produced as part of their curricular studies.  Categories included metalwork, woodwork, plastic, portfolio work and the culinary excellence programme.

Joining Ross in the winning line up were Megan Sprott a fellow 4th year pupil at Knightswood, Tommy Takali a 4th year at Springburn Academy, David Kelt a 5th year at Castlemilk High School, Emma Boyle a 4th year at St Mungo’s Academy and Leanne Reid a 4th year at Hillhead High School.  Tommy shared the Woodwork Standard Grade 1st joint award with Ross.  The Deacon Convener’s Achievement Award was won by Drumchapel High School.

“Our panel of judges from the Trades House reviewed more than 150 submissions and the calibre of work has been quite exceptional once again this year,” said Michael Low, Deacon Convener of the Trades of Glasgow.  “The piece by Ross McAlear was outstanding.”

Commenting on Ross’s overall win, Richard Smith, a design and technology teacher at Knightswood said:  “Ross has always shown a keen interest in practical work and has a real aptitude for the subject.  He made a superb job of his table and fully deserves the Trades House award.”

Deacon Convener Michael Low and other senior Trades House of Glasgow office bearers were joined by Lord Provost Bob Winter to present pupils in all categories with 1st, 2nd, 3rd and commended certificates, each also receiving £40, £20, £15 and £10 respectively.  Ross was also awarded a certificate and £75 as overall winner.

The School Craft Competition, supported by Glasgow City Council Education Department, is part of several Trades House initiatives aimed at encouraging the preservation of traditional crafts alongside those of new technology skills.
