Trades House Robert Burns Competition 2020
The Trades House Robert Burns Competition 2020 was held on the 24 February 2020, with 18 performances being given
by those who won 1st and 2nd place awards at the Robert Burns Festival in January. The skill and enthusiasm shown by the youngsters was quite outstanding.
The Festival in January was the biggest yet, with over 200 young people taking part.
Body & Sole campaign continues
The Cordiners recently handed over a cheque at St Bernard's Primary School for £8,000 to Glasgow City Council's Schools
and Learning Department: their second sports footwear donation in the current session.
Hundreds of wellies have been given to various schools as a result. Their children wear them for outdoor activities in wet weather, and also allows them to complete the “daily mile”, a physical activity programme introduced a few years ago in efforts to combat childhood obesity.
Some of the 38,000 most disadvantaged children in Glasgow only have one pair of shoes, and wet or muddy conditions has often prevented them from participating in outdoor activities.
Trades House Burns Supper 2020
The Trades House Burns Supper was held in Trades Hall recently (21 Jan 2020) with over 150 guests attending. £1,800 was
raised on the night for the Deacon Convener’s charities. Highlights included performances from last year’s Trades House Burns Competition winners, with Liam Kearney (14) – who went on to scoop the top award of ‘Young Burnsian’ at the Robert Burns World Federation Scottish Schools Competition – giving an excellent rendition of “Address to a Haggis”.
The evening was featured in The Herald (see article, right).
Busy before Christmas
DC Bruce Reidford was exceptionally busy before Christmas, carrying out various civic duties. Among other things, he attended the Police Chaplaincy, strengthening the accord that the Late DC Tom McInally
signed with Police Scotland. Bruce met Jim McDonald, President of the Police Christian Association.
He also visited Ronald McDonald House with some of his grandchildren to deliver presents, on behalf of 'Glasgow the Caring City'.
Presentation to Late DC
Late Deacon Convener Tom McInally was presented with a maquette of a statue of St Mungo as a thank you for his help
which led to the publication of the book 'Glasgow''s Best Kept Secret'. Craig Bryce, author of the book, made the presentation at the Christmas Lecture on the 4 December.
Last year the Incorporation of Masons presented the full size statue to the City of Glasgow College. It is located on the college's new campus.
