Weaving his way to the top..
Kenneth Dalgleish was elected Deacon Convener of the Trades House of Glasgow and 3rd citizen of Glasgow by fellow members on 14th October 2020
Kenneth is an Ex Deacon of the Incorporation of Weavers, one of Trades House’s 14 Crafts, after joining them in 2010.
The Incorporation, which celebrated its 500th anniversary in 2014 maintains its links with the modern textile industry by taking a keen interest in the support of promising young people likely to make a contribution to this, important Scottish industry. To this end it funds a number of grants, scholarships and prizes for textile students at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow School of Art and Langside and Cardonald Colleges, Glasgow, and also sponsors the Sma Shots Weavers Cottage, in Paisley.
The 14 Crafts are ancient trade organisations, most of which were formed in the 17
thCentury, that gave support to workers in rapidly growing industries in Glasgow such as baking, shoemaking, cooperage, carpentry and metalwork. Today they are independent charities giving assistance, educational support and funding to their own areas of interest. Over £750,000 is awarded annually to deserving individuals and organisations by the Crafts and Trades House

DC day with a difference
‘DC Day’ is when the Trades House elects its new Deacon Convener. This traditionally takes place during a meeting of the ‘Old’ House members and the meeting is attended by many of the Ex Deacon Conveners
This year however due to COVID-19 restrictions, we were unable to hold this meeting and therefore our new Deacon Convener was sworn in via Zoom!

Hammermen win the Trades House Curling Trophy.
On Monday the 24th of February 2020, the Skinners and Glovers faced the Hammermen in the final of the Trades House
knock-out curling competition, and Andy Callander’s Hammermen’s team of Scott Gibson, Murray Cruickshanks and Chris Evans managed to beat the Skinners, overcoming Skip Jamie Mason, David Bird, Alister Bird and Lisa Mason by 5 shots to 4, with the Hammermen only winning with their last shot at the last end.
The game was indeed a close run thing, as the Hammermen only won two ends against the Skinners 4, but the difference was that the Hammers took a 3 and a 2, whilst the Skinners were taking singles. The 7th end was a well played blank allowing Andy’s team the single shot win.

'Mr Tennent's' becomes Freeman of the City and a Maltman
Mr Donald Smith (92) is known as 'Mr Tennent's' having worked at their Wellpark brewery since the age of 13, when he used to clean
out the giant beer barrels by hand. By the time Donald retired almost 50 years later, this 'temporary job' had lasted considerably longer than usual and Donald had risen to the rank of Distribution Director! Not only that, he tells the story that he was conceived at Wellpark and lived there as a boy, his father employed to look after the horses that used to deliver the barrels of Tennent's.
Donald was awarded his Burgess ticket and membership of the Maltmen recently, attending a lunch and surprise presentation of the awards which rendered him 'unusually speechless'!
