Trades House Affiliation with Greater Glasgow Police

Deacon Convener Tom McInally and Collector Ken Dalgleish signed an affiliation with Greater Glasgow Police at the

beginning of October, undertaking to work together with common purpose and in mutual respect. The Greater Glasgow Police was represented by Chief Superintendant Hazel Hendren and Assistant Chief Superintendant Bernard Higgins.

The affiliation is a reconfirm of the close respect which the Trades House has for the Police and the long association since members of the Trades House helped to establish the City of Glasgow Police as the first Police Force in the United Kingdom in 1788 and which was later approved by the UK parliament in 1800.

History made at Maltmen AGM

Eight new Members were sworn-in at the Inc. of Maltmen AGM, six of them women including the Lord Provost of Glasgow -
the first women to be sworn-in (and the only remaining Craft to have, up to now, been 'men only'!).

Why do people join one of the 14 Crafts? The majority have a desire to assist in the charity or educational work that the Crafts do - it is good to give back! Sometimes they have long standing family connections to them, or work in a connected industry (such as hospitality in the case of the Maltmen), whilst others have ancestors who worked as actual Maltmen in Glasgow in years gone by.

Trades House's ‘Big Project’ designed to help shape youngster’s futures

The Trades House of Glasgow’s ‘Big Project’ launched on Monday (16 September 2019), with 160 pupils from High Schools in

Drumchapel, Lochend, Castlemilk and Govan each participating in 3 days of residential outdoor activities taking place over a fortnight.

The 13 and 14 year old pupils were selected by their schools according to who would benefit most from the outdoor experiences. The activities they are participating in (including abseiling, pole climbing, laser tag, kayaking and shelter building) were chosen to improve the youngsters’ confidence, behaviour, social/team skills and give them an increased sense of responsibility. The first week is underway at Auchengillan Outdoor Centre near Drymen and the second week takes place at Dumfries House.
