Conservation programme for Trades House Library

A recent re-classification and re-shelving of the Trades House Library has helped to

identify books that require specialist conservation. As part of our conservation programme, a selection of these books will be sent away each year for specialist restoration to Carronvale Bindery in Falkirk.

The first such identified books have now been conserved and returned back to the Trades House Library. They include two volumes whose repair was kindly sponsored by the Trades House Ladies’ Club: James Denholm’s History of the City of Glasgow and Suburbs, 1789 and A View of the Merchant’s House of Glasgow, 1866. The Association of Deacons have also kindly sponsored the repair of one very large 19th century photograph album. Year on year the conservation programme will ensure that volumes from the 18th and 19th centuries have a shelf life for many years to come.
