Trades House Curling Final 2019 - Inc. of Masons v Hammermen

Both strong teams, and both recent winners, the Masons skipped by Doug Kerr

turned out against the Hammermen, led by Don Rutherford on Monday 21st January to do battle for the Trades House “Cigar Box” Trophy.

The Masons had the Smith brothers at third and second, Iain and Gavin, with Iain serving his first year as convener of curling, in place of Stuart Orr, who had served many a long year as convener but was now happy to retire and leave the organisation in good hands. James Bacon, grandson to ex Deacon Convener David Dobson, played lead admirably. To get to the final the Masons had defeated the Coopers and the Bakers

The Hammermen had Iain Hamilton at three, Maggie Rutherford at two and Jim Inglis at lead. Their route to the final had been at the expense of the Tailors and the Gardeners.

You would have thought that the Masons had the game well in hand when they took three shots at the fourth end to lead 5-1, but you do well not to underestimate the Hammermen, who promptly took a three back at the fifth end and a single at the sixth to go into the final end “all square”, five stones each, but with the Masons having the all important last stone.

Indeed, the Masons prevailed and the cigar box was theirs. Congratulations to the Masons, who considered their victory to be a tribute to retiring convener Stuart Orr, and commiserations to the Hammermen who no doubt look forward to next year’s competition.

All too soon now, I will be submitting my request for ice (usually on a Monday and at 5.30pm or 6pm) and I would be very pleased to enter a “full house”. If the Maltmen, The Weavers and the Wrights could possibly find teams – or a convener who could put together a team it would be such a pleasure to get back to every craft having an entry.

I am assuming that all those who played this year will enter for next year, but if any of the three crafts mentioned above would like to take part or any craft member wants to put his or her name forward, I am available at burtonmh@aol.com

Michael Burton – Trades House Convener of Curling.
